| Edward Colston Bennett, whose father William Bennett had been a bookseller at Duchy Place, Strand.
ECB was described as a Stationer and Valentine manufacturer. His prints were advertised as "highly gelatinised". From his games in the Johnson collection it appears he produced a series of very attractive printed games which JJ collected, but they were apparently not a commercial success. His business was in administration in 1861 and in 1862 he was adjudged bankrupt and in debtors' prison.
His addresses were 11 Holly Street, Dalston, Middlesex, then (1861 census),
9 Skinner Street, Snow Hill, London.
Later in the 1860's he was in Birmingham, in partnership with a wholesale stationer CW Allen.
(from biographical detail kindly supplied by Laurence Worms)
It is possible some games may date from his time in Birmingham. |
