billiard and bagatelle table maker (fl.1871-1892)
Edwards was listed in the London Post Office Directory 1871 at 42a Mintern Street, New North Road. He was also recorded in The Furniture Gazette Directory, 1873, 1876 & 1877 and advertised in The Furniture Gazette from 1 July 1876 onwards, with two addresses: 182 Kingsland Road and factory at Mintern Street, Hoxton.
A visit to the factory and showrooms was reported in The Furniture Gazette, 7 November 1874, to view several full-sized billiard tables and also miniature ones to be placed on dining tables. Edwards’ prices were reputedly cheaper while maintaining quality comparable to those of the larger firms of billiard table makers, like Cox & Yeman and Burroughes & Watts.
Edwards was located at 30 Mintern Street in 1880 and working with the City and Guilds London Institute to promote cabinet making [The Furniture Gazette, 13 November 1880]. He exhibited a carved walnut billiard table, with a matching marking board & cue-rack, and every requisite for a billiard room at the Labour Saving Machinery Exhibition, Agricultural Hall, London, in March 1881 [The Furniture Gazette, 19 March 1881]. He also participated in the Furniture Exhibition, 1881 and the 2nd Furniture Trades Exhibition, 1882, illus. [The Furniture Gazette, 13 August 1881, 25 May & 13 May 1882].
In 1892 Kingsland Billiard Works was producing billiard tables suitable for all budgets [The Furniture Gazette, 15 March 1892]. |
